Selecting suitable air rifle pellets is an important part of preparing for target shooting. Different pellet designs offer different characteristics, and the right choice depends on the air rifle’s specifications, the intended discipline and the manufacturer’s recommendations.
This guide explains common air rifle pellet types, important product specifications and what to consider before purchasing.
Understanding Air Rifle Pellets
Air rifle pellets are projectiles designed for compatible air rifles. They are manufactured in different calibres, shapes, weights and materials.
Although pellets may look similar, their dimensions and design can differ significantly. Selecting a compatible product is therefore more important than choosing one based only on appearance or price.
Common Types of Air Rifle Pellets
Domed Pellets
Domed pellets have a rounded head and are available in different weights and calibres. Their suitability depends on the air rifle, pellet specifications and intended application.
Wadcutter Pellets
Wadcutter pellets have a relatively flat head. They are commonly used in paper-target shooting applications where clearly defined holes can make scoring easier.
Pointed Pellets
Pointed pellets have a tapered front profile. They are available for certain airgun applications, but their suitability for a particular target-shooting discipline should be assessed against the manufacturer’s guidance.
Other Pellet Profiles
Additional designs may be available depending on the product range. Always review the technical specifications rather than assuming that a particular shape will perform best in every air rifle.
Five Important Factors When Selecting Air Rifle Pellets
1. Calibre Compatibility
Calibre is a fundamental specification. Check the air rifle manufacturer’s documentation before purchasing pellets.
2. Pellet Weight
Pellet weight is usually expressed in grains. Different weights can affect performance, and the appropriate choice depends on the air rifle’s design and intended use.
3. Material and Construction
Pellets may be manufactured from lead or other materials. Check the product description, applicable regulations and any restrictions associated with your shooting facility.
4. Product Consistency
Manufacturing tolerances and physical condition are relevant considerations. Avoid visibly damaged or deformed pellets.
5. Intended Shooting Discipline
Precision paper-target shooting, recreational airgun use and other disciplines may have different equipment requirements. Check the relevant rules before selecting a product.
Air Rifle Pellet Storage and Handling
Store pellets in a clean, dry and secure place. Keep them in suitable packaging and protect them from crushing or contamination.
When handling lead pellets, minimise direct contact, avoid eating or drinking in the handling area, wash your hands afterwards and follow appropriate safety guidance.
Choosing Air Rifle Pellets with Confidence
A suitable pellet should match the air rifle’s specifications and the requirements of the intended application. Product quality, compatibility and reliable information are more useful selection criteria than unsupported performance claims.
